We tested 8 SEO forecasting tools on how accurate the projections were, how usable they were for non technical marketers, whether they covered AI search visibility across
Google AI Overviews, ChatGPT, and Perplexity, and whether they were worth the price. Hereβs what actually holds up in 2026.
SEO forecasting tools project future organic traffic and revenue by applying click through rate curves to keyword search volume at target ranking positions.
The most accurate paid options in 2026 are SEOmonitor and Ahrefs Traffic Potential. Advanced Web Ranking offers the strongest free SEO option.
No tool on this list forecasts AI search citation rate yet.
Every SEO plan starts with the same conversation. Leadership asks how much traffic the program will produce, when, and what itβs worth.
No tool on this list forecasts AI search citation rate yet.
If you want the fastest useful projection: Ahrefs Traffic Potential plus our free Google Sheets template. Together they cover about 80% of what most SEO teams need.
If you want a dedicated forecasting tool: SEOmonitor is the best paid pick for agencies. Advanced Web Ranking is the best free one with real methodology behind it.
If your buyers now research on ChatGPT and Perplexity: None of these SEO tools measure AI search citation rate yet. This is the gap that changes the calculus in 2026, and itβs the one weβve been solving for on our own clients.
Most teams answer badly, which is why forecasting tools exist. They project position 1 for every keyword, ignore seasonality, and use click through rate data from before AI Overviews existed. Six months later the projection misses by 40% and finance stops trusting the channel.
Weβve tested most of the popular ones over three years running search for ecommerce and DTC brands. The landscape shifted more in the last twelve months than the previous five. Google AI Overviews now appear on almost every commercial query. ChatGPT and Perplexity are pulling shopping traffic. Traditional keyword volume modeling misses both.
This guide is the honest version of what weβd recommend in 2026, ordered from most useful to most narrow. It includes three free tools and a DIY Google Sheets method.
What Does an SEO Forecasting Tool Actually Do?

An SEO forecasting tool projects organic traffic and revenue by multiplying keyword search volume by an expected click through rate at a target ranking position. It then phases that number across a ramp period. The output is a monthly traffic and revenue curve you can defend to finance.
The math is simple in principle. You take your target keywords, estimate the ranking position you can realistically hit, apply a click through rate curve to the search volume, and add it all up.
Where the tools differ is in how they handle three things: ranking probability, the curves themselves, and the seasonality of the keywords. A good tool bakes in real Google reported data and adjusts for search intent. A weak tool applies a flat 30% to position 1, puts it on a dashboard, and never shows you the assumption.
Two things worth naming upfront that even the best tools donβt do yet:
- AI search visibility: None of the popular tools measure your citation rate on ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Claude, or Google AI Overviews. This matters more every quarter as buyers shift research to AI. We cover the platforms that do measure it in our comparison of AEO Insights, Profound, and Otterly.
- Content quality decay: Most tools assume content ranks and holds. Real content decays without refreshes. Better models account for this.
SEO Forecasting Tools vs Sales Forecasting Software
These are different product categories that share a word. An SEO forecasting tool projects organic traffic from search rankings.
Sales forecasting software projects closed revenue from pipeline stages inside a CRM. Neither one replaces the other.
The confusion matters because buyers search βforecasting toolβ and land in the wrong category.
A sales forecasting tool like Clari, or the module inside Salesforce, reads deal data, rep activity, and historical close rates. It has no visibility into search demand.
Predictive forecasting sits across both disciplines. In search it means modeling ranking probability and content decay.
In sales it means scoring deal likelihood. If your goal is connecting SEO investment to revenue, youβll need both systems, with the search model feeding traffic and conversion assumptions into the sales model.
How We Evaluated Each SEO Forecasting Tool
We scored every tool on five criteria and compared each projection against actual six month outcomes using real client data from Sequence Commerce engagements, with permission.
- Accuracy: How close did the toolβs six month projection land to actual results?
- Methodology transparency: Does the tool show its math, or is it a black box?
- AI search coverage: Does it measure AI Overview or LLM citation visibility?
- Ease of use: How long from account creation to first useful projection?
- Price: Total cost including any prerequisites. A $99 tool that requires a $500 Ahrefs subscription isnβt really a $99 tool.
All pricing below reflects published rates as of July 2026.

The 8 Best SEO Forecasting Tools of 2026
The eight tools below are ranked from most useful to most narrow. Three are free, three are paid, one is enterprise only, and one is a spreadsheet you build yourself.
1. Ahrefs Traffic Potential and Keywords Explorer

Best all around forecasting: From $129/mo
- Ahrefs is the strongest all around pick because Traffic Potential does most of what dedicated tools charge extra for, and the underlying index is larger than any competitorβs.
- Ahrefs doesnβt market itself as a forecasting tool, but its Traffic Potential score shows the total traffic the current top result gets across every keyword the page ranks for. Thatβs a far better projection input than raw keyword volume.
- Combine Keywords Explorer with a spreadsheet and you can run a rough six month projection in about an hour.
- What itβs missing: no built in scenario modeling, no AI citation measurement, and no revenue attribution beyond what you build yourself. Itβs raw data more than a finished projection.
- Best for: in house SEO teams and agencies that already pay for Ahrefs. If you have the subscription, you donβt need most other forecasting tools.
2. Semrush Traffic Forecast and Keyword Gap

Best for competitive gap forecasting: From $139/mo
- Semrush wins on competitor visibility. Nothing else models growth as well by benchmarking against a specific competitorβs ranking positions.
- Position Tracking plus Keyword Gap gives you a realistic set of achievable keywords rather than aspirational ones.
- Where Semrush falls short is depth of methodology. Projections are directional, not diagnostic. You get a chart but not a breakdown of assumptions.
- Best for: agencies pitching client wins with a clear competitor gap story.
3. SEOmonitor Forecast

Best paid dedicated forecasting tool: Custom agency pricing
- SEOmonitor is the best paid option because itβs the only tool that exposes every assumption behind a projection, which is what lets you defend the number in a client meeting.
- It was built specifically for agency pitches and enterprise teams. The module builds best case, expected, and conservative scenarios, models seasonality, and layers in specific keyword targets. Every projection shows the underlying curve and volume assumption.
- The interface is designed for people who model weekly. If this is a real part of your job, SEOmonitor is a step above a spreadsheet.
- The catch is price. Agency pricing starts higher than most small businesses will pay, and the platform requires setup time.
- Best for: agencies pitching retainers where the projection has to hold up to CFO scrutiny.
4. Advanced Web Ranking: The Best Free SEO Forecasting Tool

Free
- Advanced Web Ranking is the best free SEO option because it runs on rolling monthly click through rate curves that update as SERP layouts change, and the methodology is fully public.
- They publish one of the most respected studies in search, and the free tool uses those curves under the hood. You paste in keywords with search volume and current rank, and it projects traffic at target positions.
- The tool is bare bones by design. No revenue modeling, no scenario building, no team features. But the numbers are trustworthy because you can audit where they came from.
- Best for: anyone who wants a fast, free, defensible projection without setting up a spreadsheet.
5. seoClarity Forecasting

Best enterprise forecasting platform: Custom enterprise pricing
- seoClarity is the strongest enterprise option because projections connect to live site health data rather than sitting on top as a bolt on.
- Itβs built for teams running programs across hundreds of thousands of URLs. The module integrates with content grading, site auditing, and rank tracking.
- Itβs overkill for anyone under about $50M in annual revenue with a small team. At scale, the integration is genuinely useful.
- Best for: enterprise brands with dedicated teams managing 5,000 or more tracked keywords.
6. Animalz Traffic Calculator

Best simple free calculator: Free
Animalz is the fastest free option for a rough number, with no signup wall and results in under five minutes.
You input a domain, a set of keywords, and target rank positions. It returns projected monthly organic traffic and estimated value.
Projections are directional rather than exact. Animalz uses generalized click through rate data instead of live SERP specific numbers, so actual results usually come in 15 to 30% above or below what the tool predicts. Thatβs fine for a fast napkin math check.
Best for: pressure testing whether a keyword cluster is worth chasing.
7. ZISSOU by PACIFIC

Best free tool for client facing forecasts: Free
ZISSOU is the most capable free tool for stakeholder presentations, and itβs the only free option that models three scenarios.
It has been publicly available since 2023. The interface guides you through inputs step by step, and the dashboard visualizations work well for showing a non technical stakeholder what a projection means.
PACIFIC states that ZISSOU pulls from Google Search Console, Google Analytics, and Semrush, and models conservative, moderate, and aggressive cases. That scenario feature is rare outside paid platforms.
Methodology is less transparent than Advanced Web Ranking, so projections stay directional.
Best for: presenting to founders, CMOs, and marketing generalists.
8. Google Sheets DIY Using the Moz Method

Building your own model in Google Sheets is the best option if you want full control over assumptions, and itβs the fastest way to learn what a projection actually measures.
Moz published a spreadsheet method years ago that still works. You use published click through rate curves, keyword volume from Ahrefs or Semrush, and formulas for current versus target rank. It takes about two hours the first time.
The value isnβt the spreadsheet. Itβs that building it once forces you to understand the inputs. Every practitioner should build one before trusting any automated tool.
We keep a template that pre populates the curves and formulas. Send it to your team as a training exercise before spending money on paid tools.
Best for: teams that want defensible numbers and full control. Also the best onboarding exercise for junior SEOs.

SEO Tools We Tested and Cut
Four SEO tools appear on competing lists and didnβt make ours: Moz Pro, Google Keyword Planner, BrightEdge Data Cube, and GA4 Predictive Metrics.
Moz Pro
Moz Pro didnβt make the list because its forecasting layer is thinner than Semrush at a similar price.
Rank tracking is solid and the keyword research data is reliable. But it doesnβt expose enough of its assumptions to defend a projection in a client meeting. The Moz spreadsheet method at number 8 above is still the more useful contribution.
Three Other Near Misses
Each of these three answers a related but different question, which is why none of them made the main list.
Google Keyword Planner: Free and accurate on volume, but it projects paid impressions rather than organic traffic, useful as an input, not as a standalone tool.
BrightEdge Data Cube: Genuinely strong at enterprise market share modeling. We cut it because seoClarity delivers comparable capability with better mid market pricing.
GA4 Predictive Metrics: Google Analytics 4 predicts purchase and churn probability for existing users. It doesnβt project organic acquisition.
How CTR Curves Actually Differ Across Forecasting Tools
Two tools can produce projections 40% apart from identical keyword inputs, purely because they run different click through rate curves. Knowing whose data your tool uses tells you how much to trust the output.
Every projection is really a curve wearing a user interface. The four main data sources youβll encounter:
Advanced Web Ranking: Rolling monthly curves sampled across millions of keywords, updated as SERP layouts shift. This is the most cited public study in search. AWRβs own tool uses it natively, and SEOmonitor, seoClarity, and most agency models build on top of it.
Backlinko and Sistrix: Backlinkoβs analysis of 4 million search results put average position 1 click through rate at 27.6%. Sistrix uses similar methodology with slightly different numbers. Both blend queries with and without AI Overviews, which matters for how you use them.
First party Search Console data: The gold standard. Tools that pull your actual Google Search Console data and blend it with published benchmarks tighten projections meaningfully. Only paid tools do this well.
Generalized approximations: Animalz and similar free tools use rounded published numbers. Fine for napkin math. Not defensible for a client pitch.
Which CTR Baseline Should You Use to Forecast SEO Traffic
Use one curve consistently. Donβt start from a blended number and then subtract again for AI Overviews, or youβll understate traffic twice. This is where most projections break.
| Position | Clean SERP baseline (First Page Sage, 2026) | Blended benchmark (includes AIO queries) |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | 39.80% | 27.60% |
| 2 | 18.70% | 15.80% |
| 3 | 10.20% | 11.00% |
| 4 | Pull from live AWR curve | 8.40% |
| 5 | Pull from live AWR curve | 6.30% |
| 6 | Pull from live AWR curve | 4.90% |
| 7 to 10 | Pull from live AWR curve | 2.4 to 3.9% |
| 11 to 20 | Pull from live AWR curve | 1.2% average |
Notice that position 3 reads higher in the blended column than the clean column. Thatβs a sampling artifact, not a real effect. The two curves come from different datasets with different methodologies, which is exactly why mixing them produces nonsense.
How to choose: Use the clean column when youβre going to apply the six adjustments below manually. Use the blended column when you want a single rough number and wonβt adjust further. Never mix them inside one model.
The 6 CTR Adjustments Most 2026 Forecasts Miss
No tool applies these six adjustments automatically. Apply them by hand if your projection has to hold up six months later.
1. AI Overview presence, Subtract 15 to 40%: When Google shows an AI Overview, organic click through rate drops sharply. GrowthSRCβs analysis of more than 200,000 keywords found AI Overviews on roughly 31% of search result pages, and position 1 click through rate falling 32%, from 28% to 19%. Seer Interactiveβs November 2025 study found click through rate on AI Overview queries dropping from 1.76% to 0.61%. Seerβs April 2026 follow up showed partial recovery, so treat this as a moving number rather than a fixed penalty. Informational queries lose the most. Transactional queries lose less.
2. Featured snippet presence, Subtract 25 to 30%: If a featured snippet displays, positions 2 through 10 see reduced click through rate. Position zero gets a lift, but only if youβre ranking there.
3. Branded query lift, Add 20 to 40%: Branded queries convert at higher rates than the published baseline. Someone searching a brand name clicks that brandβs listing regardless of position 1 versus position 3. Segment branded and non branded before applying any curve.
4. Ecommerce SERP shopping tiles, Subtract 10 to 15%: Google Shopping tiles at the top of ecommerce SERPs eat organic clicks. This is the adjustment that matters most for DTC and marketplace brands, and almost no generic guide mentions it.
5. Local pack presence, Subtract 20 to 25%: For any query with local intent, the local pack takes clicks that would otherwise go organic.
6. Mobile vs desktop split, Weight by traffic source: Mobile click through rate runs 15 to 25% lower than desktop at the same position, because mobile SERPs surface more paid units and knowledge panels above organic. If your traffic is mobile heavy, and most ecommerce brands are, weight accordingly.
How Do SEO Forecasts Differ by Business Category?
Same math, different assumptions. Ecommerce projections need margin math and shopping tile discounts. B2B needs a 3 to 9 month revenue lag. Local caps out around position 4. Publishers need separate decay models for news and evergreen.
Ecommerce and DTC: The dominant variable is Google Shopping tiles and Amazon competitor listings crowding the SERP, so the organic ceiling is lower than the curve suggests.
Add margin based revenue projection, meaning units sold times margin, not just traffic times average order value. Seasonality matters more than in any other category. Q4 numbers modeled in Q1 usually look better than they are.
For marketplace brands, factor in that a share of category demand never reaches Google at all. Our guide to AI shopping optimization covers where that demand goes.
B2B SaaS: Longer sales cycles mean revenue lag is 3 to 9 months from click to close. Traffic to MRR requires an assumption about conversion through demo, then SQL, then close.
Category authority content like comparison pages and alternatives pages models more reliably than blog content.
B2B services and agency: Small keyword universe, usually under 200 target terms. Position 1 versus position 5 matters far more than in B2C because search volumes are lower. Local pack presence in geo modified queries eats click through rate heavily.
Local business: Local pack presence caps your practical organic ceiling at position 4 or 5. Google Business Profile optimization delivers more traffic than ranking improvements below position 3.
Publisher and media: News queries have a shorter half life than evergreen queries. Evergreen decays 5 to 10% per year without refresh. News decays 60 to 90% within 30 days. Different models are required for each.
How Do You Validate a Forecast After 90 Days?

Pull actual results from Google Search Console at day 90, divide actual traffic by projected traffic, and subtract one to get your variance.
A well built model should land within plus or minus 20%. Then diagnose the gap and update your assumptions.
Building a projection is easy. Being right about it is hard. Every serious team runs a retrospective at day 90 and day 180. If you donβt do this, youβre just guessing.
The validation workflow
- Pull actuals from Search Console at 90 days: Total clicks and impressions for the modeled keyword set.
- Calculate variance: Actual traffic divided by projected traffic, minus one.
- Diagnose the miss: If actual came in low, was it rank movement, click through rate compression, an AI Overview arriving, or seasonality? If high, did the algorithm favor you, or did you underestimate target rank?
- Update the model: Adjust curve assumptions or ramp curves for next time based on what you learned.
- Track your teamβs accuracy over time: A team that consistently lands within plus or minus 15% earns more trust from finance and leadership than one that keeps missing by 40%.
Almost no agency does this. Itβs the single fastest way to make your numbers more credible over twelve months.
Tool Integration and Analytics Cheat Sheet
seoClarity is the only tool that connects natively to all four systems. Animalz connects to none. The best tool is often just the one that fits your existing stack.

When Should You Run an SEO Forecast?
Run one when a real decision depends on it and you have at least three months of Search Console data to calibrate against. Skip it when youβre mid sprint with direction already set, or when youβre modeling a keyword you have no realistic path to rank for.
Timing matters more than most teams realize.
Run one when:
- Youβre pitching a new retainer and need to justify the investment
- Youβre planning next quarterβs content calendar and choosing between clusters
- Youβre mid year budgeting and need to show what the second half will produce
- Youβre pitching a new investment such as headcount, tool budget, or content spend
- Youβre comparing two competing keyword strategies before committing resources
Donβt bother when:
- Youβre inside a 90 day sprint that already has direction
- Youβre modeling a keyword with difficulty above 80 that you have no realistic shot at
- Youβre six months into a program thatβs showing traction and just need to keep executing
- You have less than three months of Search Console data to calibrate against
How to Forecast SEO in Google Sheets for Free

Export 20 to 50 keywords, apply a clean click through rate curve, adjust for SERP features, phase across a twelve month ramp, then layer in conversion rate and margin. It takes about two hours the first time.
This is the actual method we use with clients before they invest in anything.
Step 1: Pull your target keywords:
Export a list from Ahrefs or Semrush. For each one, capture search volume, difficulty, current ranking position if any, and your target position, usually top 3 or top 5 based on realistic effort.
Step 2: Apply a clean CTR curve: Add a column that multiplies search volume by the click through rate for the target position.
Use the First Page Sage clean baseline for positions 1 through 3 and pull positions 4 through 20 from the live Advanced Web Ranking curve. Donβt use a static table published more than six months ago.
Step 3: Apply the six adjustments: Discount for AI Overviews, featured snippets, shopping tiles, and local packs. Add lift for branded terms. Weight for mobile share.
Step 4: Sum and phase: Sum projected monthly traffic across all keywords. Then split that number across a realistic ramp: 20% by month 3, 50% by month 6, 80% by month 9, 100% by month 12. This accounts for the time it actually takes rankings to move.
Step 5: Layer in revenue: Multiply projected organic traffic by your average conversion rate and average order value. Then multiply by your margin. This is the number the CFO cares about.
Our template: We use a version of this spreadsheet with every engagement. It includes the curves, seasonality adjustments, and a keyword decay model already built in. Ask for it on a strategy call and weβll send it over.
Common Mistakes When Forecasting SEO
Five mistakes account for nearly every bad projection: assuming position 1 everywhere, ignoring seasonality, using one curve for branded and non branded, forgetting AI Overviews, and not modeling decay.
Over three years of building these for ecommerce clients, weβve seen the same five over and over.
1. Assuming position 1 for every target keyword: The most common mistake. If youβre on page 3 for a term with 50,000 volume and difficulty of 80, projecting position 1 in six months is fantasy. Set realistic targets per keyword based on current rank and competitive difficulty.
2. Ignoring seasonality: A gift adjacent product modeled in September looks great because volumes spike in Q4. Run the same numbers in February and they collapse. Always use rolling twelve month averages, not the current month.
3. Using generic CTR curves for branded queries: Branded queries convert at wildly different rates. Someone searching for a brand name clicks the top result almost regardless of position. Segment by branded versus non branded and use different assumptions.
4. Forgetting AI Overviews eat clicks: When Google shows an AI Overview, organic click through rate drops 15 to 40% across the SERP. If your target keywords trigger them, and you should check manually, your curves overstate traffic significantly. This is the single most under appreciated shift in 2026 SEO.
5. Not modeling content decay: Content ranks and then slowly loses rankings unless refreshed. A one year projection that assumes month 12 equals month 6 overstates the number by 10 to 25%. Model a modest decay rate on aging content.
New for 2026: Can Any Forecasting Tool Predict AI Visibility?
No. Not one tool on this list measures whether your brand gets cited in ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, or Google AI Overviews. seoClarity has partial coverage. Everything else has none.
This gap is bigger than it looks, but not in the way most people assume. AI search is a visibility channel before itβs a traffic channel.
Similarwebβs 2026 GenAI Brand Visibility Index found that major publishers including Reuters and The Guardian receive under 1% of referral traffic from AI platforms, even though those platforms cite them constantly.
That finding cuts both ways. If you model AI search as a traffic line item, youβll be disappointed. If you model it as a brand visibility and consideration line item, itβs already material and growing every quarter.
What an AI visibility model should include:
- Citation rate: The percentage of category buyer queries where your brand is named in the AI answer.
- Share of voice: Your brandβs share of AI answer mentions versus your top three competitors.
- Sentiment: How positively AI engines describe your brand.
- Brand share of answer: Your position within an AI answer, since being named first is not the same as being named fourth.
None of the tools reviewed above cover these. Itβs the reason weβve been building this measurement into our own client work at Sequence Commerce. We break down which platforms are worth paying for in our guide to generative engine optimization and our breakdown of what an AEO insights company actually is.
Conclusion
The right SEO forecasting tool depends on your team size, not on which one has the most features. Ahrefs plus a spreadsheet covers most in house teams. SEOmonitor earns its price for agencies defending numbers to a CFO. seoClarity fits enterprise programs where projections have to connect to site health.
The accuracy gap almost never comes from the tool. It comes from stale click through rate curves and skipped SERP feature adjustments.
Hereβs what Iβd tell any team building a forecast this year.
Ranking on Google in 2026 without being cited in ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google AI Overviews is a partial forecast for a partial channel.
My team at Sequence Commerce builds six month projections for ecommerce and marketplace brands covering organic traffic, AI Overview citation rate, and share of voice across ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, and Claude.
Those three now move together, and thatβs the thing to get ahead of.
Frequently asked questions
Seven questions cover what buyers most often ask about accuracy, free options, setup time, and AI search coverage.
Which SEO Forecasting Tool Is Most Accurate?
SEOmonitor and Ahrefs Traffic Potential land closest to actual six month results in our tests. Both use real click through rate data and account for competitive difficulty. Free tools like Animalz and ZISSOU tend to run 15 to 30% high or low depending on category, which is fine for directional checks but not for a client commitment.
Is There a Free SEO Forecasting Tool?
Yes. Advanced Web Rankingβs free SEO tool uses published click through rate curves and produces defensible projections. Animalz and ZISSOU are also free, and ZISSOU adds three scenario models. For teams that want maximum control, building your own model in Google Sheets is free and often more accurate once you understand the math.
How Accurate Is SEO Forecasting?
A well built six month projection typically lands within 20% of actual results. A twelve month one typically lands within 30 to 40%. Anything longer than 18 months is guesswork, because algorithm changes, AI Overviews, and competitive shifts all compound. Accuracy improves fastest when you validate at day 90 and correct your assumptions.
Should I Forecast SEO in Google Sheets or Use a Paid Tool?
For small teams and single projects, Google Sheets is fine and it teaches you the math. For agencies pitching multiple clients per week, or in house teams modeling monthly, a paid tool like SEOmonitor pays back in time saved and defensibility during stakeholder review.
Do Any SEO Forecasting Tools Include AI Search or AI Overviews?
Not really. seoClarity has partial coverage. Most others donβt measure AI citation rate at all. This is the current gap in the category, and the one most worth watching over the next twelve months. If your buyers now use ChatGPT or Perplexity, youβll need to layer AI visibility measurement through a platform like Profound or Peec AI on top.
How Long Does It Take to Set Up an SEO Forecast?
Ahrefs Traffic Potential takes about ten minutes for a rough number. Google Sheets DIY takes two hours the first time and 30 minutes after that. SEOmonitor takes half a day of setup for the first client and less after. Free tools like Animalz and ZISSOU take five to ten minutes each.
How Do Ecommerce SEO Forecasts Differ From B2B Forecasts?
Ecommerce models have to account for shopping tiles and marketplace listings compressing the organic ceiling, plus heavier seasonality and margin based revenue math. B2B deals with a longer lag between click and revenue, often three to nine months. Using a B2B model on a DTC brand consistently overstates Q1 and understates Q4.
