The Definition

What is ACoS?

Here is how ACoS works.

ACoS (Advertising Cost of Sales) is an Amazon PPC metric that measures how much you spent on ads as a percentage of the sales those ads generated. It tells you how many cents you spent to earn $1 in ad-attributed sales.

ACoS is the operational metric for Amazon Sponsored Products, Sponsored Brands, and Sponsored Display campaigns. Lower ACoS means more efficient spend. What counts as low depends on category. A 12% ACoS is strong in supplements and hard to hit in beauty outside branded terms.

Sequence Commerce manages Amazon PPC for 100+ brands, including Heinz, Nestlé, Catelli, Joe Boxer, and VASANTI. We built this calculator on the same formulas we run across $500M+ in client revenue.

How to Calculate

How to calculate Amazon ACoS in four steps.

The math is straightforward. The harder part is knowing what a good number looks like in your category, which the benchmark table below covers.

Step 01
1

Pull your ad spend

From the Amazon Ads console, pull total spend for the campaign or date range you want to measure.

Step 02
2

Pull your ad-attributed sales

From the same report: total sales revenue attributed to those campaigns. Use the same date range.

Step 03
3

Divide spend by sales

Ad spend ÷ ad-attributed sales. Multiply by 100 to convert the decimal to a percentage.

Step 04
4

Compare to your benchmark

Use the benchmark table below to see what good ACoS looks like in your category.

Reading Your Results

What your ACoS results mean.

Not sure what to do with the numbers? Here's how to read the four outputs and turn them into a real bid decision.

ACoS %

Your core efficiency signal. Compare it against your category's healthy range in the benchmark table below. If you're above the healthy band, tighten bids or cut poor-performing search terms first.

ROAS ×

The same signal as ACoS, expressed as a multiplier instead of a percentage. Useful when reporting to stakeholders who run Google or Meta campaigns alongside Amazon.

Profit

Sales minus ad spend only. This is not net profit. It excludes COGS (cost of goods sold), FBA fees, and storage. Use it as a directional signal, not a P&L number.

Margin %

Ad-level margin after spend. Compare your ACoS to your gross margin. If ACoS is higher than your gross margin percentage, the campaign is losing money at the product level.

What is ACoS in Amazon advertising?

ACoS (Advertising Cost of Sales) is an Amazon PPC metric that measures how much you spent on ads as a percentage of the sales those ads generated. It's calculated as (ad spend ÷ ad-attributed sales) × 100. A 20% ACoS means you spent $0.20 in ads for every $1 of ad-attributed sales. Lower ACoS means more efficient spend, but good depends on category, product margin, and campaign goal.

How do I calculate Amazon ACoS?

Divide your total ad spend by your total ad-attributed sales, then multiply by 100. Example: $300 ad spend ÷ $1,500 ad sales × 100 = 20% ACoS. Use the same date range for both numbers. Use the calculator above to run the math across 18 Amazon marketplaces.

What is a good ACoS percentage on Amazon?

A good ACoS depends on category and goal. For established brands maintaining steady sales, healthy ACoS typically runs between 10% and 35%, depending on category. For launches (where you want fast rank), 25% to 50% is acceptable. For branded keywords, ACoS typically runs between 4% and 18%, depending on category. See the benchmark table above for category-specific ranges from Sequence Commerce's $500M+ in client revenue.

What is the difference between ACoS and ROAS?

ACoS and ROAS use the same data, just inverted. ACoS = ad spend as a percentage of sales (lower is better). ROAS = sales generated per $1 of ad spend (higher is better). A 20% ACoS equals a 5× ROAS. Most Amazon operators speak in ACoS because Amazon's ad reports default to that metric. Most cross-channel operators (Google, Meta) speak in ROAS.

What is TACoS and how is it different from ACoS?

TACoS (Total Advertising Cost of Sales) measures your ad spend as a percentage of your total sales, paid and organic. ACoS only measures ad-attributed sales. TACoS is the more important account-level metric because falling TACoS at flat or rising total sales means your paid spend is driving organic lift. Most Amazon experts watch TACoS as the primary North Star and ACoS as the daily operational metric.

What is break-even ACoS?

Break-even ACoS is the point where ad spend exactly cancels out product margin: no profit, no loss. Formula: gross margin % = break-even ACoS %. If your gross margin is 35%, your break-even ACoS is 35%. Anything below that is profitable. Enter your gross margin percentage. That number is your break-even ACoS.

Can I use this calculator for multiple Amazon marketplaces?

Yes. The Sequence Commerce ACoS calculator supports 18 Amazon marketplaces: United States, United Kingdom, Germany, France, Italy, Spain, Netherlands, Sweden, Poland, Canada, Mexico, Brazil, India, Japan, Australia, Singapore, UAE, and Saudi Arabia. The calculator adjusts currency formatting automatically.

Is this ACoS calculator really free?

Yes, completely free. No signup, no email gate, no credit card, no rate limit, no upsells. Sequence Commerce built this calculator for the Amazon seller community. We use it ourselves internally and figured we'd publish it. The only ask: if you ever need an agency to actually run your PPC, take a look at our PPC services.

How accurate is this ACoS calculator?

The formula is exact: ad spend divided by ad-attributed sales, times 100. Accuracy depends on your inputs. Pull ad spend and ad-attributed sales from the same Amazon Ads report, same date range, same currency. The calculator does the rest.

What's a realistic ACoS for a brand new Amazon launch?

For new ASIN launches, expect ACoS in the 22% to 60% range in the first 30 to 60 days. This is intentional. You are paying for visibility while Amazon gathers conversion data on the listing. Sequence's launch playbook compresses this back to category-healthy ACoS by day 90 to 120.
